STUDY METHOD (always have your printouts/pages in front of you)

1. Listen to the assigned audio files a whole bunch of times, over several days. Let it sink in!

2. Sing along with the audio files many times until it is identical, smooth and confident. If there are glitches, use the slider to “rewind” and review a word or two at a time until identical.

3. Sing the whole assignment without the audio file (as you will in your next lesson).

Use this approach every week, and knock my socks off with how well you know it!

AND, 4. every week, you MUST review at least once, everything learned to date, and FIX any glitches.

Go back and listen to all homeworks with aliya parts – listen twice and sing twice. Work on an perfect one aliya at a time. Quality over quantity!

By the end of the week, sing through all three aliyot from the RIGHT side and make sure they’re smooth.

Tu, Mar 30

4:20-4:40pm

Review All three aliyot, first from RIGHT side, then from STAM side

Plan on reviewing everything to date from here on.

Aliya 1 – verse 2, fix trope of “l’-imo ul-aviv” – make sure you go up for an extra note at the end of ‘i-mo”

Aliya 1 – verse 5 – fix trope of ‘uviv-saram’ – make sure your voice goes up high on ‘viv’

Aliya 1 – verse 6 – fix the note of “ki” to stay in the same key. It’s one note down from your previous note.

Aliya 2 – verse 7 – fix up trope of “ki kadosh-hu”

Aliya 2 – Verse 10 – v’hakohein – use same note you just ended the previous word on. Try not to jump up 3 tones – you’ll end up uncomfortably high.

Aliya 2 – Verse 11 – fix trope of “l’aviv ul-imo” – note the order of the two words is the opposite as in Aliya 1, and the trope is just a mercha-tip’cha (not a fancy, twisty, high trope like in aliya 1)

Tu, Apr 6

4:20-4:40pm

Go back and review Aliya 1 and 2 homework

Review Sh’lishi (3) and note trouble spots

Talk about runthrough in the sanctuary.

Aliya 1 – fix very ending music – Heim makrivim… (high note is on vim)

Aliya 2 – fix up v12 – eit has its own trope; shemen-mish-chat is connected on the high note; make sure the whole line is smooth.

Aliya 3 spots to work on:

v13 – viv-tu-le-HA (not cha)

v14 – watch the order of ‘vachalala zonah

v15 – practice v’lo y’chaleil… making sure ki is sung to a t’vir trope. Use the audio file if needed.

Practice everything learned so far, starting with Kiddush for Friday night (Feb 6), and Kabbalat Shabbat prayers/songs.

Tu, Apr 14 EXCELLENT JOB DURING YOUR RUN-THROUGH! To work on between now and your Bat Mitzvah:

  • Make sure your printed pages are in order
  • Work on V’ahavta paragraph, particularly ending. Make sure it ends confidently, not too low in your voice.
  • Smooth out Y’did Nefesh p14
  • Smooth out Mizmor Shiru Ladonai p18
  • Smooth out L’Cha Dodi p21/22
  • Add “and Shabbat Shalom” to both the beginning and end of your D’var Torah. Finish adding in the Mitzvah project part.

Cantor Green will lead V’sham’ru p34. If you want to join in for chorus, you can practice it here – it’s the first 35 seconds: MP3

On the day (particularly during Kabbalat Shabbat), I will just jump in with my parts, to keep things moving smoothly. You can stay where you are, and I’ll announce you for your parts.

Great work! Home stretch!
